San Luis Potosi, February 15 1999


       Second mail to Attendees of the SELEX MEETING in San Luis Potosi
       ================================================================


  Dear Collaborators,

      this note goes to all people attending the meeting in San Luis Potosi 
  on February 21-23, 1999.  This will be the last general mail before you
  leave.  If you are missing some information, please contact us. All 
  information is also available on the Web via the "selex at work" page. 

      18 people will attend the meeting (we lost some since the last mail...)
  We have arrival times for 13 people, the 3 german students are coming on 
  their own.  We are still missing some departure times.

      We have hotel rooms reserved for all of you.  The Hotel is called
  "Real Plaza" and is located in Av. Carranza 890, Phone 146055 or 146969,
  Fax 146639.  We have tourist information (maps, restaurants, etc.) which 
  you will get at arrival.

      In the airplane you have to fill out 2 forms:  Immigration form (tourist
  visa) and custom form.  State in the immigration form (or when you will be 
  asked) that you will visit San Luis Potosi as a tourist.  After getting
  your checked luggage, you have to press a button on something which looks
  like a traffic light -- if you get green, you will pass.  This has to happen
  in the first mexican airport you enter -- for all of except the Sunday
  arrivals this will be Mexico City.  The same procedure applies at SLP
  airport on Sunday arriving from San Antonio.

      In Mexico City, after leaving the custom area, turn to the left and
  go to hall B to check in again with Aeromar, if necessary (I don't know
  if United will check you through to SLP).

      Once at the airport in San Luis Potosi, we will pick you up.  If you
  cannot see Antonio or Jurgen, look for the SELEX logo (the one you find
  on our web page), the person holding it will take care of you (he will speak
  english...). If you need money, there is an ATM to your left leaving the
  arrival hall. Close to the Hotel are banks with ATMs.

      For people arriving in Mexico City and leaving from there with the Bus
  (the german students and Maurizio):  To get from the airport to the bus
  terminal, you can use the Metro only when you have "small" luggage.
  Otherwise you have to take a Taxi:  Leaving the custom area, immediately
  to your left is a counter to buy the ticket for the taxi.  Tell him
  you like to go to the "Terminal del Norte". Last time I was there the ticket
  was 62 Pesos.  When you are at the Bus Terminal, enter and go to the far
  right to the counter of ETN.  There buy a ticket to SLP (is 230 pesos).
  There are banks and ATMs all over the airport to get Pesos.

      Now to the emergency procedures:  If you get lost or your plane is
  late, etc., you can always call us.  The phone numbers are at the end
  of the mail.  Any time of the day is o.k. to call (that's like during the
  run...)  To call, you either ask someone for a phone, or to use a public
  phone, you have to buy a phone-card. They are solded nearly everywhere
  indicated by a blue/yellow sign "LADA se vende aqui". They come for
  different amounts, the cheapest one for 20 Pesos.  A fast call within
  Mexico will cost about 5 pesos.  
  At the Airport in San Luis and at the Bus Terminal you can get Taxis all
  the time, should you not be able to reach one of us.  You have to buy a
  ticket in advance (80 Pesos at the airport, 20 Pesos at the Bus Terminal),
  tell them "Hotel Real Plaza".  But please try to notify us later that you
  arrived!

      Within San Luis, we will transfer you from the Hotel to all places
  and back at night.  Nevertheless, we will provide you with information
  about local busses, taxis, etc. at arrival.  We will also transfer you
  back to the airport for departure.  

      In addition to the meeting itself, there will be a coctail-reception
  (Tequila, beer and food available) at Jurgen's place on Sunday night, an 
  official collaboration dinner in the patio of an old house in the historical
  city center, which also includes a talk about the history of San Luis 
  Potosi and live music, on Monday night, and a sight-seeing tour of the
  historical center on Tuesday around lunch.  All these events are sponsered 
  by the University (yes, we got the money!).

      I will send a separate mail about the tourist trips on Sunday and
  Wednesday, as early as I get the prices fixed for the trips.

      The weather:  This weekend we had a cold front passing, but I hope
  by next weekend it will be warmer again.  The maximum temperature during
  the day is well above 20degC, but it cools down after sunset.  Also inside
  houses it could be cold.  The absolute minimum in the morning hours will 
  be around  5degC.  So, a warm sweather for the evenings is needed. You should
  also think about some kind of hat if you participate in the tourist trips.
  Zacatecas is 2500m above sea level, and the sun is always shining!
