Final Bulletin RICH2004
The 5th International Conference on Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counters (RICH2004) will be held in the Hotel ``Iberostar Quetzal'' in Playa del Carmen, in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo, from Tuesday, Nov.30 to Sunday, Dec.5, 2004. The hotel is an ``all-inclusive'' resort, e.g. the price includes all meals. The scientific program starts at 9am Tuesday morning, and ends on Sunday around noon. A detailed schedule can be found on the conference web page at http://www.ifisica.uaslp.mx/rich2004. An up-to-date version will be distributed at registration. Generally talks are from 9:00-12:30, and from 4:30 to around 7:30.
The registration desk will be open from Monday, 9am, for the whole week.
The conference is supported by Centro Latinoamericano de Física (CLAF); Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avancados (CINVESTAV), Mexico; Concejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT), Mexico; European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland; Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), Batavia, IL, USA; National Science Foundation (NSF), USA; Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Stanford, Ca, USA; Sociedad Mexicana de Física (SMF), Mexico; Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), Mexico; Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Morelia, Mexico; Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (UASLP), Mexico; Universidad National Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico.
If you arrive on an international flight, you have to clear immigration, pick up your luggage, and clear customs. Corresponding forms to be filled out should be distributed at check-in or in the airplane. Save the immigration paper stamped by the officer carefully - when you loose it you have to pay some 40 dollars fine. Clearing customs consists in pressing a bottom at a traffic-light like device; if you get a red light, you have to open your suitcases. If you arrive on a national flight, you just have to pick-up your luggage, with exception that your suitcase was checked until Cancun (most airlines provide this service), so you have to clear customs. It is possible that somebody asks for your luggage-tags to verify that you took only your suitcases, so save them and keep them handy.
Transportation to/from the hotel is provided by a local company, IMC. Leaving the luggage area, you should be welcomed by somebody with a RICH2004 banner. If not, go to the counter labeled ``Mexicana VTP'' close to the rental car counters. They have a list with all your names and nominal arrival times. On the main arrival day, Monday 29, we have in addition two of our students at the airport to assist.
If you booked a flight/hotel vacation package, please notify us, and follow the instructions corresponding to your package. The trip from the airport to the hotel takes about 40min.
At check-in at home, make sure your checked luggage goes all the way to Cancun. There is no need to pick it up in Mexico City; customs will be cleared in Cancun.
After leaving the plane in Mexico City, check the monitors and/or ask the airline for the departure gate for your flight to Cancun. Gate changes are very frequent at this airport. The terminal is one looong building, with a smooth transition from international to national. Stay close to the gates, do not turn where is says ``Immigration'', but continue directly to your departure gate; you will pass immigration at a special counter.
If your luggage was not checked through to Cancun, you have to follow the signs for immigration and luggage pick-up. Leaving the customs area, turn to your left and walk for some time, until you find the check-in counters of your airline; re-check your luggage and go upstairs to your gate.
Posters will be up all week in the conference room; there will be no special poster session. The organizers will provide double-sticky tape etc.
The excursion will take us to ``Coba'', an archaeological cite of a Mayan city, on Thursday afternoon. We have to leave sharp at noon. Box lunch will be provided on the busses. You should wear good walking or hiking shoes. Additional tickets for accompanying persons can be purchased at the registration desk for $30, as long as there are seats available in the busses.
Additional trips can be booked at a travel agency in the hotel lobby. Booking one day in advance is usually sufficient.
On Friday evening the Conference Dinner will be held in a restaurant in downtown Playa del Carmen. Busses will leave at 7pm at the hotel. Additional tickets for accompanying persons can be purchased for $40 at the registration desk.
The weather at the beginning of December is usually warm, not too hot. Typical temperature during the day is close to 30 degrees (80s), cooling down to 22 degrees (upper 60s) at night. The water in the Caribbean Sea is warm. The hurricane season is over, and only rarely it will rain. The main attraction of the conference site is the beach - so bring your bathing suites and sun cream.
The currency in Mexico is the ``Peso'', which has a floating (e.g. daily changing) exchange rate, of about 11.50 Pesos per US-Dollar. Playa del Carmen is a tourist area, and most prices are quoted and can be paid in dollars. Credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere.
