In this talk I will discuss some work in progress on how the mathematical tools of Bayesian inference and Information theory can be used to select and study statistical models that best describe a dataset.  These methods can also be used to study the critical aspects of the inferred models and their relationship to indistinguishability given a dataset. I will then  pose and answer two questions: i) how random a given sequence of bits is? ii) which are the  the critical properties of inferred p-spin models?
